NAME CHANGE

Name change publication, ready for your hearing.

Many courts ask you to publish your name change petition before the hearing. We place it in a newspaper the court accepts, on the right dates, and send you the proof to bring to court.

How name change notices work

Rules change by state and county. These are common examples; we confirm the exact rule for your case with your quote.

01

Why a name change is published

Many courts ask for public notice of a name change petition, so anyone with an objection can come forward before the hearing.

Who publishes it: Adults changing their name and parents petitioning for a minor.

Example

California: the Order to Show Cause runs once a week for four consecutive weeks before the hearing.

Where it runs

A newspaper of general circulation named or approved by the court.

Proof you receive

Proof of publication to present at the hearing.

02

How it works

  1. Send us the court order or the Order to Show Cause and your hearing date.
  2. We confirm the qualifying newspaper and the run dates that fit before the hearing.
  3. The notice runs and we send you the proof of publication.

Some states and courts waive or seal publication, for example for safety reasons. Ask the court if that applies to you.

If the hearing date is close, tell us right away: the last run has to finish before it.

Typical timeline

California: four weekly runs, so plan at least five weeks before the hearing.

What we need

Court order, case number, county and hearing date.

Cost

Depends on the newspaper and the length of the order. Fixed price before anything prints.
